Simple Interest Calculator: Guide, Formula & Practical Examples
Our free simple interest calculator determines the interest accrued on a fixed principal sum over time. Unlike compound interest, simple interest does not add accumulated returns back to the principal. It is widely used in short-term personal loans, automotive financing structures, certificates of deposit, and academic financial analysis across the United States and international markets.
The Simple Interest Formula
Simple interest is calculated using the linear formula:
I = P × r × t
To find the total future balance ($A$):
A = P + I = P × (1 + r × t)
- I: Total simple interest accrued over the period.
- P: Starting principal or original loan amount borrowed/deposited.
- r: Annual interest rate expressed in decimal form (e.g., $7\% = 0.07$).
- t: Time period elapsed in years (or fraction of a year).

Frequently Asked Questions
How does simple interest differ from compound interest?
Simple interest is computed strictly against the base initial principal. Compound interest computes returns on the initial principal plus all previously accumulated interest, accelerating growth over multi-year horizons.
Can simple interest be applied for periods under one year?
Yes. Convert the term into a fractional year. For example, 6 months is $0.5$ years, and 90 days is approximately $90 / 365$ years.
Does this calculator factor in income tax on interest earned?
No. Simple interest calculations represent gross mathematical figures. Depending on your tax residency (such as IRS 1099-INT reporting in the US or TDS in India), interest earnings may be taxable.
